Head Coach Lance Leipold
Leipold, a quarterback for the Warhawks in the mid-1980s and former Warhawk
assistant coach, was associate head coach and offensive coordinator for
the University of Nebraska-Omaha since 2004.
Leipold, of Jefferson, played four years for the Warhawks (1983-1986).
The 1984 team won the WIAC title, and the teams he played on were a combined
20-10-2.
He is still second all-time in the Warhawk record books for career pass
attempts (647), third in yards (4277), fifth in completions (303) and
tied for ninth with 27 touchdowns.
He is also among the top 10 in those same categories in the UW-W records
for a single season, all in his junior year in 1985. In a game against
UW-River Falls in 1985 Leipold completed 37-57 for 494 yards -- all among
the top 20 individual games in WIAC history. He was the team MVP in 1986,
and was elected to the UW-W Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Leipold's coaching career began where he played, at UW-W. He coached
quarterbacks in 1987 and wide receivers in 1988, helping both teams win
WIAC (then WSUC) championships. After one year at Doane College in Nebraska,
he returned to UW-W in 1990 to coach and work on a master's degree. He
helped the Warhawks win another WIAC title while serving as Berezowitz's
offensive coordinator. Leipold moved on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison
for the 1991, '92 and '93 seasons, serving as a graduate assistant all
three years, he worked with the offense. The 1993 Badgers won the Big
Ten and the Rose Bowl, going 10-1-1. His first stint at Division II Nebraska-Omaha
covered 1994-2000, where he was part of a staff that turned UNO from a
1-10 team (1994) to North Central Conference champions in 1996, 1998 and
2000. He was UNO's offensive coordinator in 2000. He moved to the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2001, serving as an administrative assistant the
same year Cornhuskers won the national championship. In 2002 and 2003
Nebraska also went to bowl games with Leipold as a member of the staff.
He returned to UN-Omaha in 2004 as the associate head coach and offensive
coordinator, where he contributed to three consecutive 8-3 seasons and
three straight conference championships.
Leipold takes over for his former coach Bob Berezowitz. Berezowitz announced
his retirement before the 2006 season, ending a 22-year career. That span
included 158 wins, third most in the history of the WIAC, a .680 winning
percentage, nine conference championships, and five NCAA III playoff appearances.
Leipold and his wife Kelly have a six-year old daughter, Lindsey, and
a son, Landon, who was born in July.
Offensive Coordinator Jim Zebrowski
The
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football program has a new offensive
coordinator. Jim Zebrowski arrives to Whitewater after leading a resurgence
of the Lakeland College football program. Zebrowski compiled a 28-13 mark
in four seasons at Lakeland, including a sparkling 24-4 mark in the Illini-Badger
Football Conference. The Muskies captured the conference title in 2005
to net the program it’s first-ever trip to the Division III Playoffs.
His team shared the conference crown in 2004 and never finished lower
than second place in his four seasons.
Zebrowski played football at Mount Union College (Ohio) where he graduated
in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics.
After coaching in the high school ranks in Ohio for six years, Zebrowski
spent three years on the coaching staff at Southern Illinois University
in Carbondale, serving several roles including tight ends, wide receivers
and quarterback coach.
Immediately prior to his head coaching stint at Lakeland, Zebrowski
spent three years as the offensive coordinator at Millikin (Illinois)
College. While coaching the Big Blue offense, Millikin won the College
Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship and NCAA Division
III playoff berth in 2000. During that championship season, the Big Blue
finished second in the nation in scoring at 44.6 points per game while
rushing for nearly 300 yards per game.
Defensive Coordinator Brian Borland
Brian Borland enters
his fourteenth year on the UW-Whitewater football coaching staff, and
his seventh year as it’s defensive coordinator. Borland also held
a defensive coordinator position for three years at Baker University (KS)
(1991-1993) and at the University of Minnesota-Morris (1989-1990). Prior
to coaching at these two universities, Borland was a graduate assistant
football coach at he University of Florida and at the University of Wisconsin.
He also coached defensive backs at Arizona Western College. Borland attended
school and played college football at Morningside College (1981-1984).
He was a four-year letter winner, a team captain and an All-Conference
selection. Borland was also a two-year letter winner in track at Morningside
(1981-1982).
Borland earned Wisconsin Collegiate Assistant Coach of the Year honors
from the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association for the 2004 football
season. In addition to his football coaching duties at UW-W, Borland was
the head coach of the women’s track and field team from 1994-2001.
In 2000, Borland led the team to a forth place finish at the NCAA Division
III Outdoor Championships and earned national coach of the year honors.
He is an instructor in physical education.
Brian has a wife, Gayle, and two sons. Evan and Jaren.
Offensive Line Coach Steve Dinkel Steve
Dinkel is entering his sixth season at UW-Whitewater as the offensive
line coach, run game coordinator, and working with special teams. Dinkel
is a graduate of the UW- River Falls, where as a player he played on four
conference championship teams with the Falcons. Prior to accepting his
present position, Dinkel served as the head football coach at Jefferson
High School (WI) for ten years. During his tenure with the Eagles, he
guided Jefferson to a 60-36 record. In the process, the Eagles won a state
championship, and made three state play-off appearances. While coaching
at Whitewater, Dinkel has helped develop nine all-conference and five
All-Americans in the offensive line. Max Sakellaris earned the honor of
Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Offensive lineman of the year in 2006.
Dinkel earned his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. Dinkel teaches at Jefferson High School while coaching with the
Warhawks. He resides in Jefferson with his wife, Cathi and their two daughters
Anna and Jenna.
Linebackers Coach Chris Simpson
Chris
Simpson graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Wisconsin University
of Whitewater in Physical Education. Down the road, he attended UWW where
he got his masters in Curriculum and Instruction. During his coaching
career, Simpson coached 2 years at Waunakee High School where in 1999
they were the Division III Champions, 1 year at Loras College in Dubuque,
IA as a Graduate Assistant, and 1 year at Wisconsin University of Platteville.
Currently, Simpson is going into his fifth year on the UW-Whitewater coaching
staff.. In the summer of 2006, Simpson was selected as a participant at
the NCAA Men’s Football Coaches Academy. He also received a NFL
Minority Coaching Internship Program from the Green Bay Packers, for Defensive
Line & Special Teams in the summer of 2006. This past summer, Simpson
earned a return trip via the NFL’s Minority Coaching Internship
Program, this time with the Dallas Cowboys.
Simpson’s goals for this football season is to win the WIAC and
for everyone to stay healthy and to improve each week. Simpson has married
to Nicole and they have three sons, Jarryn, Riley and Noah.
Running Backs Coach Nelson Edmonds
Nelson
Edmonds returns to the UW-Whitewater coaching staff after spending the
2006-07 academic year in an advising position at the University of Wisconsin
in Madison.
The Madison native returns to Whitewater for a 12th year on the Warhawk
coaching staff, serving again as running back’s coach.
After graduating from Madison East High School, Edmonds took his substantial
football talent to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to attend college
at Northern Michigan University where he was an All-American running back.
When not coaching at UW-Whitewater, Edmonds focuses on his work as a counselor
in UW-Whitewater’s Academic Advising and Exploration Center.
Edmonds, with wife Amy, reside in Whitewater with two daughters, Alisendra
and Matiana.
Defensive Line Coach Bill Hoagland
A
native of Peoria, Illinois, Bill Hoagland graduated from Washington Community
High School in 1969. As a senior, he was selected to the Illinois All
State Football Team and MVP of his high school football team. As his high
school’s 1st All State Football player, Hoagland had his #40 football
jersey retired. He went to Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where
he was honored as MVP his senior year in football and wrestling. He was
also selected in 1972 to the NAIA 1st Team District 14 All State Football
Team. Hoagland earned his Master’s Degree in Education from the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1981.
Hoagland is currently teaching English at Mukwonago High School where
he was also a football coach for 33 years and a consistent honoree of
Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He was inducted into the
Mukwonago High School’s Athlete Hall of Fame in 2005. Hoagland has
coached wrestling, track and is currently the director of the Strength
and Conditioning for the high school. Additionally, he was the defensive
coordinator for the 1st British/American High School Football Championship
held in Southern Wisconsin, and awarded District 19 Assistant Coach of
the Year in 2001 for Mukwonago. In 2003, Hoagland was the defensive line
coach for the winning South Shrine Team in the North vs. South All Star
Game. In 2004, he helped coach his high school football team to a perfect
14-0 season and the Division I State Championship. 2006 will be his first
season as a defensive line coach for UW-Whitewater.
Hoagland lives in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin with his wife, Barbara,
of 35 years who is a second grade teacher at Valley View Grade School.
They have two sons. David, the oldest, is a graduate of UW-Whitewater.
He currently is teaching and coaching football and track at Oak Creek
High School in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. He is married to Amie, a Physical
Therapist. They have two little girls Meggin and Madison. The youngest
son, Steven, is a Lakeland College graduate; he is currently teaching
in Milwaukee and coaching football and track at Milwaukee Bay View High
School. He is married to Bonnie, a Milwaukee school teacher, and they
are expecting their first child this football season.
Wide Receivers Coach Joe Parish
Joe
Parish enters his second year on the UW-Whitewater football coaching staff.
After serving as running backs coach in 2006, Parish will spend 2007 as
the Warhawks’ wide receivers coach.
Joe Parish graduated in 1987 from Watertown High School and then went
to study physical education and coaching at UW-Whitewater where he graduated
in 1994. While attending UW-Whitewater, Parish lettered in football in
1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992.
The former Warhawk football player is back at UW-Whitewater seeking
a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Physical
Education, Health and Recreation.
Parish taught at Cambridge High School from 1994 to 2005. He was also
head football, boy’s basketball, and baseball coach at various times
during his 12 years teaching in Cambridge. In his five years as the Bluejay’s
head varsity basketball coach, Parish’s teams won three Eastern
Suburban Conference titles. His 2004 football team captured a conference
crown.
Parish and his married to his wife, Raquel and have three children,
J.T., Brooke, and Kiefer.
Tight Ends Coach John O'Connor
John
O’Connor begins his first year as UW-Whitewater’s tight end’s
coach.
O’Connor comes to Whitewater after serving serving two year’s
at Division II Wayne State University as it’s tight ends coach.
While at Wayne State, O’Connor earned his Master’s Degree
in Sports Administration.
The young coach is a 2002 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College with
a degree in psychology where he played defensive back for the Warriors.
O’Connor began his coaching career as an offensive graduate assistant
at the University of Utah. The following year he served as a varsity assistant
at Walled Central High School in Michigan.
O’Connor resides in New Berlin where his wife Elizabeth who is
a surgical resident at Froedert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee.
Strength and Conditioning Coach Lee Munger
Munger
returns for his third season working with the Warhawk Football team and
Whitewater athletics as the strength and conditioning coordinator. Munger
is a graduate of South Dakota State University where he was a four year
letter winner as a defensive lineman. He earned his master’s degree
from UW-Lacrosse before becoming the head strength and conditioning coach
at South Dakota State University from 2002 to 2005.
Director of Football Operations Andy Harris
Andy
Harris returns for his fifth season with the with the UW-Whitewater football
program, serving as the team’s equipment manager and recently promoted
to director of football operations. Harris is a 2000 graduate from Milwaukee
Pius XI High School, where he was a manager for the 2000 WISSA State Champion
boys’ basketball team. He then attended UW-Waukesha before transferring
to UW-Whitewater and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree
in History. After spending three seasons as a student manager for former
head coach Bob Berezowitz, Harris received two internship offers from
the Jacksonville Jaguars and the University of Arizona to be part of their
respective equipment room internship programs. Andy chose the University
of Arizona postion where he remained for one year before returning to
the Warhawks prior to the 2006 season.
